Oude Markt, Leuven: What to See at the Old Market Square

Oude Markt (Old Market) is worth a stop in Leuven, though it is a small, contained square rather than a sight that fills an afternoon. Give it 20 to 45 minutes to walk the perimeter and read the facades, or an hour or more if you take a table and order a beer. This guide covers where the square sits, why it carries its famous nickname, what the architecture around it looks like and how to pair it with the Grote Markt nearby.

Where Oude Markt sits in Leuven

The square is centrally located and sits just off the Grote Markt, Leuven's main square, so you reach it in a couple of minutes on foot from the town hall end of town. Walk from the Grote Markt towards the Oude Markt and the street opens out into a wide pedestrian space. Because the two squares are so close, treat them as one visit rather than two separate outings.

You do not need transport to reach it: the whole centre is walkable, and the square itself is pedestrianised, with the surrounding buildings forming a continuous architectural frame. Approach from the Grote Markt rather than from the ring road and you get the square as a reveal. If you are coming from further out, aim for the Grote Markt first and use it as your anchor. Why it is called the longest bar counter in the world

Sponsored

The nickname 'the longest bar counter in the world' is a local label for the square's long run of bar, café and restaurant frontage rather than a literal measurement. The square is ringed by venues whose terraces line the facades, and the phrase is used as shorthand for that continuous frontage and the bustle it creates.

The square itself: paving and Flemish architecture

Oude Markt is a broad pedestrianised space, and the point of a visit is the ring of buildings around it: stylish Flemish architecture with attractive facades, and flags marking many of the venues. Walk the full circuit rather than stopping at the first terrace, because the character changes along each side. The square is compact enough that this takes minutes, not an hour.

If architecture is your reason for coming, place Oude Markt in a wider walk: the Leuven Town Hall (Stadhuis van Leuven) on the Grote Markt is the city's showpiece civic building, and the Groot Begijnhof Leuven gives you a very different, quieter kind of historic street plan a short walk out. Doing the three in sequence makes a natural half-day in the centre.

Bars and cafés around the square

The bars, cafés and restaurants lining Oude Markt are the reason most visitors linger, and they are places to sit out with a Belgian beer or a meal rather than sights in themselves. Locals as well as students use the terraces when the weather allows, so a sunny afternoon looks quite different from a wet weekday morning. Pick a table by the facade you find most interesting and the square works as a viewing platform.

Expect the square to fill during the academic year, when Leuven's student population makes Oude Markt the centre of its social life and the terraces get busy. That rhythm is part of the experience: come early in the day for a quieter look at the buildings, or accept the crowd if you want the square at its liveliest.

Market Rock in August

Sponsored

For three days in August the square hosts Market Rock, a local music festival with free admission that mostly features national artists. If you are in Leuven in August, the square becomes a festival venue rather than a place to sit, and the atmosphere is entirely different from a normal week.

How long to allow and pairing it with the Grote Markt

Budget 20 to 45 minutes for Oude Markt on its own, and add the Grote Markt next door for a combined stop of about an hour and a half if you also look at the town hall. The two squares are close together, so there is next to no travel time to factor in. If you want one more stop in the same area, Ladeuzeplein Leuven is the city's other large square and is a short walk away.

For a fuller day, the M Museum Leuven (M Leuven) and the botanical garden Leuven give you an indoor and an outdoor option within reach of the centre, and both work well as a counterweight to a morning of squares. Build the day around two or three of these rather than trying to cover everything.

What is on the Grote Markt next door

The Grote Markt holds the Leuven Town Hall (Stadhuis van Leuven), a heavily ornamented Gothic building that is the image most people take home from the city, and Sint-Pieterskerk, the collegiate church whose outline dominates the square. Both are worth a proper look, and together with Oude Markt they make the core of a first visit.

Is Oude Markt worth the detour?

Sponsored

Yes, but as a short stop rather than a destination in its own right. Come for the ring of Flemish facades, the nickname you will hear repeated all evening, and a beer on the terrace if the weather holds, then walk the two minutes to the Grote Markt for the town hall and Sint-Pieterskerk. If you have a spare hour in Leuven, this is a good way to spend it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oude Markt really the longest bar in the world?

It is a nickname, not a measurement. The square's bars and cafés run their terraces along the facades, and the result is described locally as the longest bar counter in the world because the continuous frontage reads as one long bar when busy. Treat it as a description of the square's character.

How far is Oude Markt from the Grote Markt?

Oude Markt is just off the Grote Markt, a short walk of a minute or two. Plan them as a single stop rather than two separate visits.
